Which photos will your children want to see? - Ottawa Family Photographer

I have a true story to share. 

My 7 year old son asked me, "Mom, can you show me images of when we went on our trip to Niagara as a family?" We often chat about how much we enjoyed the Niagara region when we lived in the GTA area. We visited there frequently and always made the trip down to explore wineries, peach farms and the beautiful Falls.

So I began digging into my computer archive. We sat happily and chatted through the images in front of us. AND ...  then he turned and asked me, "Mom, why aren't you in any of these photos?" My heart stopped. He was right, I was in ZERO photos, because I was too busy taking them and to a 7 year old, it looked pretty simple. Mom was missing from the trip. My immediate reply was, "oh honey, I was there, I was the one taking the photos!" He looked at me puzzled and said, "sure, but why are you still not in them?!" He had a point and well I was trapped on how to answer. 

Then it hit me.

Photography is easy today, we snap, so we can remember. But we often don't look at it from the angle of existing in the moments that we are so badly trying to remember. What a strange twist. For someone who has a career in image preservation, I should of known better. I made these photographs for me. With absolutely NO VALUE to future viewers and in this case my son thought I didn't even go on the trip.

If you know me well, this hurt me, it hurt me ALOT.

SO much so that I began to think about the chain of images and how they will effect my story as a mother for my own children. I began to draft a solution ....

AND ... this is how I came to find myself shifting focus and beginning to offer parents the opportunity to get in the "frame", so they are along side their children. Be documented so they share their story as a whole. 

What does this new offer look like?

In true nature to my candid and storytelling photography. I am now offering the opportunity to embed myself in a small group of families for an entire year. Where we plan together a series of 4 sessions over the course of 365 days and capture ALL of you together. This will look different from one family to the next. You choose the location, activity and I'll be there for you! Creatively crafting images with you alongside your family.

Who is this for? In short, everyone.  

But here are a few examples to get your creative juices flowing :)

- Baby's First Year - watching your child grow in a series of photos from birth to 12 months
- Welcoming a new sibling - going from one child to two is a mind-blowing. You change along side your children, this will allow you to see two children grow over a year.
- For all the school aged children - learning to ride a bike, showing off their piano skills, hiking or setting up their first camp tent, sprinkler fights, family picnics ... there is so much being discovered with a child between ages 5-7.
- Grandparents, family reunions, birthday celebrations, etc
The possibilities are endless ....

▪️I have shared in a series a collection of images where I am missing from the frame in my own family photos. These photos where hand picked by my son whose assignment was to come up with photos I’ve printed in albums and share with you just what he feels is missing.⠀
